History
Bloxwich CC Womens Squad 2003

![]() |
Laura Wilkinson, Emma Pearce and Cheryl Allcock were representing Staffordshire Under 15's on the day the first womens team photo was taken. |
In
mid April 2003 during one of the normal quiet Saturday nights during the
summer at Bloxwich
Stafford Road Sports Club,
the girlfriends, wives and friends of some of Bloxwich Cricket Clubs
players and officials were spending an evening in the bar mulling over the days events on
the field. Hayley Worgan
asked the regular question Come on ladies, anybody for cricket? And she received the same old answer,
Cricket? That boring game. But
this time the conversation went on a little longer. One or two ladies asked each other,
Shall we? and from that the idea was discussed at length over many a lager,
amid plenty of derision from some male members.
Bloxwich
CC Over 40's XI ( 102 all out ) lost to
Bloxwich CC Womens XI
( 104 for 6 ) by 4 wickets
Bloxwich's newly formed Womens XI caused a sensational upset in their first ever game on
Friday 18th July 2003, by comprehensively beating the Bloxwich Over 40's XI by four
wickets in front of a larger that usual crowd at the Bloxwich Stafford Road ground.
Womens captain, Hayley Worgan, won the toss and invited the " veterans " to bat
first on a low and slow wicket. The veterans scored at a steady rate throughout their
innings. Top scorers were George Horner (24), Terry Jenkinson (14) and John Ackrill (14)
in their total of 102.
The Womens reply was dominated by skipper Worgan (40 not out) and with the all the other
girls scampering quick singles and doubles, with some less than generous decisions on
wides from the umpires, they achieved their target with one over to spare.
An excellent evening was had by all with both players and spectators enjoying a thoroughly
entertaining game.

Sunday
morning coaching under the guidance of Clarkey continued, as the Women prepared for their
next challenge, a game against Bloxwich
CC Under 14s. Again history was made on the evening of
Bloxwich
CC Womens XI ( 107 for 8 ) beat
Bloxwich CC Under 14's ( 98 for 5) by 9 runs
The newly formed Womens XI continued their unbeaten start with a convincing victory over a more experienced Under 14 team. All of the Womens team contributed to their total of 107, batting with confidence and fine technique. Hayley Worgan (10 not out) and Nicola Salt (2 not out) batted particularly well. For the youngsters Paul Perkins took 3 wickets, Tom Fellows 2 and Ashley Worgan and Tom Roobottom 1 each.
The
Under 14's batted well but fell short of the Womens total to reach 98 for 5 from their 20
overs. Jim Lewis batted well for his 25, as did Ashley Worgan (14), Cheryl Allcock (9) and
Emma Pearce (9). The Women all bowled well in particular Nicola Salt taking 2 wickets and
were excellent in the field.
And
the Women continued to train every Sunday morning, usually with hangovers from Saturday
nights in the bar, all working hard to improve their game. They have kited themselves with
team tracksuits, club shirts and their own bats, pads, gloves and protective equipment,
all paid for from their own pockets.
